Established in 2006 after a successful celebration of McAllen history during the 2004 McAllen Centennial festivities, the McAllen Heritage Center’s founding board sought to provide a more permanent home for McAllen’s past.

The historic La Placita building, the formerMcAllen Post Office, fit the bill perfectly and the museum opened in 2008. Constructed in 1935 in the popular Spanish Colonial Revival style, the buildingfeatures a decorative baroque detailing around the front door and a red tile roof. Inside, memorabilia and archival photographs help tell the story of McAllen’s robust history and, on occasion, features artwork by local artists.
