Like most border towns, San Benito was born with the arrival of irrigation and the railroad. Anglo farmers hired locals to clear brushland and build canals, and town founder Sam A. Robertson brought in the San Benito and Rio Grande Valley Railroad. A Statue of Sam A, Robertson stands outside of the San Benito Cultural Heritage Museum. The museum itself houses state-of-the art rotating displays which showcase the culture of South Texas.
